Vulcan Projecct: Texas Takes the Cake

Here’s a map put together by scientists at Purdue University’s Vulcan Project of 2002 CO2 emissions per capita [click on the map for a high-res version]. So…is anyone surprised that Texas is the reddest state? I thought not. Interestingly, here is a map of CO2 concentration with out accounting for population density, which looks pretty much identical to a population map.  It also looks to be almost inversely proportional to the population map, which presents fairly good evidence that dense urban living is the most carbon efficient way to go.

  1. I don’t understand what conclusions we are to draw from the map? If anyone knows Texas they know that in the areas with the highest CO2 emissions per the map, there is nothing. It is the least inhabited place in Texas. The vast majority of the population and industry is in the easter half of Texas (Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio). Does nature have higher carbon emissions than industrialized areas? Maybe when you have alot of cows and only 1 farmer, the cows emit too much CO2 and so the farmer takes the hit (in the per capita calculation). Maybe there are better places to focus our attention than carbon emmissions as far as the environment is concerned.

    For those of you switching out your light bulbs, not running your AC, and buying only organic hemp clothing (Prana makes some nice stuff), I have a tip – look at the carbon you actually save from those things (not much) then…plant a tree. Congratulations, you have just become carbon neutral.
